During the high school internship I taught at, we explored the agency we have in the representation of ourselves and our relationships to the world. By making abstract self-portraits, photography portraits of others and by dream collaging using symbolism, we stimulated the development of our multiple relationships with ourselves and with the world around us. In my artwork, I explore the interactions between the environment and the body. I am interested in the organicity of boundaries, their porosity and their transformative relationship with the world around us. This collage is a representation of my own exploration of how I represent myself with integrity, while respecting my limits (personal/collective) and the mutual development of the multiple relationships with myself and with others (like mycelium: starting from the cellular level, extending to the macro, thus including the existence of the other and everything around us).
Laïla Breger grew up in the world of music and dance since they were a child. A trained classical violinist and jazz singer, they left Québec for Spain in 2014 at the age of 19 to study flamenco dance at the prestigious Fundación Cristina Heeren Academy in Seville. Back in Montreal, Laïla now teaches flamenco dance to children and often gives music and dance workshops in various community spaces. The exploration of movement within everyday life has always intrigued them and is a relationship that they explore in their work as an artist and as an educator. Emphasizing rhythm, vulnerability, and authenticity, they strive to continually introduce themself and others to the somatic experience and its healing potential. They aspire to continually push themself to explore new realms of their creativity while remaining true to themself and who they are as an artist. They are currently pursuing their Bachelors in Art Education at Concordia University.
